I’ve been re-reading one of my favorite books on film editing by Walter Murch

I like above all his preface.

“Most of us are searching -consciously or unconsciously- for a degree of internal balance and harmony between ourselves and the outside world, and if we happen to become aware -like Stravinsky- of a volcano within us, we will compensate by urging restraint. By the same token, someone who bore a glacier within him might urge passionate abandon. The danger is, as Bergman points out, that a glacial personality in need of passionate abandon may read Stravinsky and apply restraint instead.”

“I always thought one minute flies by. But sometimes it really lingers on. Once, a person pointed at his watch and said to me, that because of that minute, he’d always remember me. It was so charming listening to that. But now I look at my watch and tell myself that I have to forget this man starting this very minute.”

Creo que hay pocos directores de cine que sepan crear un ambiente a la vez tan estético y tan cerrrado en sí mismo como Wong Kar-Wai. He vuelto a ver por cuarta, quinta, vez algunas de sus películas. Me fascina el ritmo que consigue darle a sus historias. Cómo el bolso, que en In the mood for love, cuál accesorio mágico e imposible de conseguir para una persona sencilla nos sirve de hilo conductor en esta meláncolica e imposible historia de amor.

Sensaciones parecidas me produjo A single man de Tom Ford. Cada movimiento de los personajes parece ajustarse a un baile preestablecido. Anudar una corbata, cerrar la cremallera de un vestido de seda, colocar una mecha del pelo que negro y  rebelde se desprende del perfecto y reluciente moño. Actos tan cotidianos pero que casi por efecto de magia se convierten en algo trascendente y bello.

Japanese Calligraphy

The Pillow Book is a 1996 film by  director Peter Greenaway based on the The Pillow Book from Sei Shōnagon (清少納言), a Japanese author and a court lady who served the Empress Teishi/Empress Sadako. The film stars Vivian Wu and Ewan McGregor.

While watching the film I couldn’t stop thinking about the value of writing nowadays. How worth and respectable the act of writing for itself is today? Is still any beauty left in this act?

Las dos primeras temporadas de Héroes me engancharon muchísimo, tanto que hubo noches que no dormí porque no podía dejar de tragarme un capítulo tras otro. La tercera temporada me pareció superflua la verdad, no entendí la mitad de los laberínticos capítulos. El otro día, lluvioso, recordé que tenía guardada en algún sitio la última temporada de Héroes y me dije, vamos a ver qué nuevas maldades y poderes tiene este Syler y me encantó la verdad. Zachary Quinto lo rompe, como siempre. Me encanta este hombre, tiene clase, si no la tuviera no le hubiesen escogido como Spok en el último Star Trek.
